The neighbours in Smeby, Sweden
Video 4:3 with sound
8 min 47 sec.

In the absence of human company during a two-week residency at Alma Löv Museum in Sweden, I found solace in nature. I turned to the plants inhabiting the surrounding countryside to adopt the role of my "neighbours". I christened each of my new-found vegetative friends by instinctively choosing names taken from the list of "Most Popular Names for Births in Sweden 2009".
Confrontation with my reflexive choice of name for each plant automatically leads to subconscious associations in the mind of the viewer. In this way, my simple act of personification and classification of inanimate objects invites the viewer to perceive the protagonists in the video in a new light and to question her own paradigms in the process.
